The Story Behind Yellow-Colored Labrador Retrievers

Back then, in the 1800’s, only black-colored Labrador Retrievers were bred for hunting purposes, and in general, as human companions since this kind of dogs can easily be tamed from the rest of its species.  However, from time to time, differently-colored Retrievers were born, specifically, yellow-colored Labrador Retrievers.  Apart from not being honored as pure bred animals, they were also presumed to be sickly because of its unnatural color, hence, they were killed.

Fate Turns its Course

Somewhere, somehow, someone took a chance in nurturing a life of which was later then called, the Golden Labrador Retriever.  The decision was probably out of pity, its unique color, or out of stubborness because the notion that this type of Labrador is sickly was never proven after all.  And whatever the reason for keeping it was, dog lovers are definitely grateful for that person.

From its pitiful beginning, the yellow-colored Labrador Retrievers are now very much adored by both their owners and those who want to own one but cannot for some reasons.  Who wouldn’t?  With its bright color and well-behaved manner, no one can resist such animal for companion.  They are now actually competing in number with their black counterparts who used to be the only apple of the eye of trainers and dog owners.

Its Advantage

Yellow-colored Labrador Retrievers, and so with the rest of the Labs, have never turned their backs against their owners and never were they reported to be unfriendly to strangers, unless they were abused, of course.  Aside from being reliable, they dispose of a very social attitude towards people even during the first meeting.

The brilliant color of the Golden Retriever also made an impact on Search and Rescue Organizations.  Although dogs of any color are useful in any search and rescue operation, as long as they have the necessary training and posses the right attitude.  Nevertheless, the sunny color of Labs is very advantageous when light is limited during an operation because it makes them easier to be spotted in the dark.  One noteable dog who was part of such organization was Sirius.  He died during the 9/11 attack while doing his daily routine mission at the World Trade Center.

This is a reality that cannot be hidden, for many of the most awarded searh and rescue dogs and other service dogs are yellow-colored Labrador Retrievers or yellow Lab crosses.  In England, for example, a successful breeding program that trains dogs for the blinds also uses crosses between Labs of any color and Golden Retrievers.

It cannot be denied that the yellow-colored Labrador Retrievers are judged for its color when deciding ownership.  Because aside from the fact that they come from a family of dogs who are highly-trainable, their skin makes them more favored from the rest of their family.
