Hello, I am very sorry to hear that you had such a difficult time with your lab/chow mix. Growing up we had a Chocolate Lab/ Chow Chow mix named Kokomo that looked just like a teddy bear, and his personality matched it. He was always very calm, but sometimes could get very playful. He was extremely protective over women and children, and was territorial at times. He hated neighborhood cats, but was ok with cats that we owned. The only 2 issues we had with him were, as a puppy he loved to dig(he out grew), and as he got older he hated anyone in a uniform. We had very little issues with him shedding, which is odd for a mildly long haired dog. Kokomo was the best dog we ever had. Although ever dog is different, Lab/Chow Chows can be a bit bull headed, so they require quite a bit of attention, and can get very jealous. For instance, if my parents were sitting to close together, Kokomo would jump in between them and lay on my mothers lap.

We had a lab chow mix, he was a wonderful dog. He was great with our cats & never chased the rabbits and he never chewed on anything except his toys. He was very loving, fun to have around. He never barked unless someone came into the yard. He just passed away on June 29, 2011. He was only a year and half. He was my daughters best friend and when and if we are ready to we would absolutely get anothere one.

Adopted a chow/lab mix 10 days ago. She is a spayed female one year old lovable dog. Things started off slowly as she had been in a shelter for awhile but now things are getting more aggressive. Sandy is her name which she is learning but not there yet. She does chew and nip and jump in a friendly way but we don't want this to continue.
Our major problem is wetting the rug. Sandy is walked in the am. outside after a long night in the crate. She usually goes both ways but then comes in and promptly goes to the carpet and wets again. What has anyone done to correct this habit that just won't go away. We have tried several products from the pet store but no luck yet.

my chow lab mix is an amazing little dog she is very loving and over protective though your dog wasn't violent he was just over protective you should had tried taking him on a walk in the park every day and take him to dog friendly places so he could get to know people my dog she sometimes does want to bite people but has never bitten anybody in her 5 years of life because she knows how people look like but when there is someone near my house she gets very upset and will look like she wants to bite but she never does so i think you should have just show him around every since you had him and do that up to when he turned 1 year old he would of been a much better dog to you and the biting problems you should have but him many chew toys and bones so that he wouldn't have bitten your things

We have a black lab/chow mix and she is such a sweet dog. She also is very protective of me and will follow me around the house and always stay between me and the door. I love having her around us and the family. She did chew as a puppy the molding, but we learned that was due to lack of vitamins in her food. We changed her food and she doesn't chew furniture anymore.

I'm frightened that the Pit bull desires a special type of owner...these pet dogs, no matter how 'tender' nevertheless have teeth, are still animals with out moral concepts and when they DO bite, won't let go. As in all creatures...some often be additional suseptable to instinctual behavior and time and time again, this breed tends to do just that.

I think you should stop posting your "bad chow-lab experiences" to websites. This is the second website that I have come across and your nothing but one of those people that help give chows in general a bad name. Dont blame the breed of the dog on the fact that you where a bad owner. Good day!

I said good day!

My girlfriend and I just got a 8 week old lab/chow mix. He is pretty lazy for the most part but gets very playful after a nice poop or pee. He is quite the little biter though. Not in an aggressive/attack way but as he's playing he will obviously bite fingers and hands, sometimes a little too hard. When he bites hard then I would like I pull his collar back and give him a stern "NO Tre". This dog is very loving and sweet, when he wants to be. I just am not sure how much biting is too much, I understand he's a puppy and will do these things but I want to be sure this is something that will end soon and not be an ongoing problem. We have a kennel for him and his first day in it is today. So here are my questions, how much biting is too much? When can I expect the biting to stop? Is sitting by the kennel till he falls asleep a bad idea because he will come to expect that? If he's crying in his kennel is it best to just let him tire himself out or go to him when he cries and try to calm him down? haha I know these are probably silly questions to some but this is my first dog (that I have been fully responsible for) and need some help. Please email at jchapm23@gmail.com with any suggestions.

it swounds like you do not know how to handle a dog! I have my little fiveyearold black lab/chow at home, we got him when he was 8 weeks old (roughly) right at our front door as a stray. He did have a REAL chewing problem so i trained him that toys are okay to chew and furniture....no. he also had a mouthing problem, but i nipped that in the butt within the first few days.

If you have a dog thats chewing or mouthing, CLAP right by his ears when he is doing something bad, he will get the message in a matter of minutes.

I love my little Jack! but you have to learn to teach a dog who is boss and what he can and cannot do!

P.S crait training is always a must
